Discipline — The Backbone of Development

Why Discipline Matters

Discipline is the backbone of development in all spheres of life and holds special significance in education. St. Mary's School expects self-imposed discipline in behaviour, punctuality, dress, neatness and mutual respect from every student.

General Expectations

  • •Students are expected to conduct themselves with dignity, modesty and simplicity
  • •Due respect must be shown to teaching staff; courteous behaviour expected toward fellow students, office staff and visitors — misbehaviour invites strong disciplinary action
  • •Students must converse in English in and around the campus; loitering outside during class hours is taken seriously
  • •Students must arrive at school 10 minutes before the scheduled time and report for the morning assembly when the warning bell rings
  • •Colour crackers, transistors, mobile phones, razors, whiteners and sharp objects must not be brought to school
  • •Students must be careful with personal belongings; cycles are parked at the student's own risk
  • •Violation of these rules may attract heavy fines, withdrawal of concessions/stipends, or expulsion in extreme cases

Detailed Rules of Discipline

  1. 1.Students should be polite and well-behaved in and outside school; respectful, honest and truthful at all times
  2. 2.The date of birth of a pupil, as recorded in the Admission Register, cannot be changed
  3. 3.Repeated absence without leave, or unexplained absence for more than two weeks, renders a student liable to dismissal. A leave letter signed by the guardian must accompany any planned absence
  4. 4.No student may leave the school premises during school hours without written permission from the Principal (given only at the request of parents)
  5. 5.Discipline must be maintained while changing classes for P.T., singing, etc.
  6. 6.No books (other than class textbooks or library books), newspapers, comics or periodicals may be brought without the Principal's sanction
  7. 7.Students repeatedly coming late, forgetting books/copies, or arriving without proper uniform may be punished
  8. 8.The school is not responsible for lost articles — no gold or valuable items/rings should be worn to school
  9. 9.Any damage to school furniture or articles must be reported to the office, and the damage made good
  10. 10.Disrespect towards teachers, bad influence, irregular attendance or neglect of homework justify dismissal
  11. 11.Students must bring their own tiffin; parents are requested not to disturb office staff
  12. 12.All students must take part in games, physical exercise and co-curricular activities — these are compulsory

Respect for Elders & Teachers — is an essential ingredient of the school's culture. Disrespect towards elders/teachers — even when one believes they are right — will not be tolerated. Grievances must be presented in a dignified, respectful manner

Boys/Girls Relationship — All students must treat each other as brothers and sisters in a healthy, morally sound atmosphere. Any breach may lead to expulsion

Medical Leave — Applications for medical leave exceeding 3 days must be accompanied by a medical certificate and bear the signature of the parent or guardian

Disciplinary Withdrawal

Students can be asked to leave the school on disciplinary grounds. The Principal reserves the right to waive any rule contained in this document without assigning any reason for such action.
